Women at the centre
Training is designed around the realities of women and young mothers from Kariobangi and neighbouring communities.
Apply now ↗Founded by the Comboni Missionary Sisters in 1992, KWPTI began at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in response to vulnerable and unsupported young women seeking refuge in Kariobangi.
Many of the women were pregnant and facing extremely difficult choices without family or financial support. The Sisters responded with human and spiritual care alongside practical education that could help each learner earn an income and build an independent future.
From the beginning, KWPTI has supported both women and their children through holistic training. Today, we offer technical and soft-skills education in catering, fashion and design, hairdressing and beauty, computer studies and other life-skill courses.
KWPTI is a nonprofit institution registered by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority. Our qualified tutors prepare learners for practical work and recognised KNEC and NITA examinations.
As overseas donations reduced following economic pressures and the COVID-19 pandemic, the institute began developing income-generating projects—including a restaurant initiative—to strengthen long-term sustainability and create decent employment.
Free baby care is available for mothers who need a safe place for their young children while they study.
The Holy Trinity Catholic Church Pro-Life group created the St. Anuarite project for young women facing crises caused by unplanned pregnancies. Parish volunteers provided pre- and post-natal counselling and dressmaking training. An initial six months at the parish followed by six months in the market was later extended, but the learners needed closer professional supervision.
The Comboni Missionary Sisters were entrusted with establishing a women’s project inside the parish compound. Kariobangi Women Promotion Project was formed to combine character and spiritual formation with technical skills, social and economic stability, and human maturity. About 240 learners attended counselling and life-skills seminars before training with local dressmaking artisans.
Following an external assessment, the Sisters brought the complete formation programme into the parish compound. With support from the Spanish NGO Manos Unidas, a dedicated technical-training institution for young women was constructed.
In February, the new structure was inaugurated by Apostolic Nuncio Msgr. Tonucci. One-year courses included Dressmaking, Knitting, Tie and Dye, and Hand Embroidery. Admissions were reduced to 107 learners to strengthen teaching quality and close supervision, with an average of about 100 learners admitted annually thereafter.
The project began the process of recognition by Kenya’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology so more learners could qualify for recognised examinations and certificates. His Eminence John Cardinal Njue proposed the name “Archdiocese of Nairobi Kariobangi Women Promotion Training Institute”—KWPTI.
